Trail Review – Rawson Lake Trail
Rawson Lake Trail
7.8km return
300M Elevation Gain
Approx time: 3 hours
Here is a trail worth taking. Whether by boot, ski or snowshoe, this journey offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains. I like it best as a snowshoe.
Your adventure begins at the Upper Kananaskis Lakes Day Use Area. The trail starts off on the Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit Trail for the first 1.2km. If you want a more gentle snowshoe continue along the Upper Kananaskis Lakes Circuit trail.
For those looking for a little more excitement take The Rawson Lake trail left and enjoy the quick change of pace onto a wonderful forested path. It’s steep, but not too steep for the next 2.7km. The switchbacks are well designed here, breaking up the tough going. There are many great rests spots along the way to catch your breath.
Soon the forest opens up to beautiful views the snow covered lake and above all…the stunning view of Mount Sarrail (3174M).
If you venture onto the lake be sure the ice is thick. There have been occasions where people have fallen through. Better yet follow the trail bends left along the lake.
As usual take caution when entering the backcountry. Be sure to have the proper gear.
And when purchasing your first pair of snowshoes take into account your weight with a pack and anticipated snow conditions.
